Libraries and carpets

Libraries will greatly benefit from the right carpet. It dampens sound, is easier to maintain, is aesthetically pleasing and prevents excess noises. There are important factors to consider before installing carpet.

The ideal carpet for this environment should consist of synthetic short pile fiber. The short pile will trap less dirt. Dirt and other debris can be more easily removed with vacuuming.  The use of synthetic material will prevent allergies and other irritation. In addition if liquid spills happen they won’t be readily absorbed into the carpet.

With a library environment there is the option of having the carpet extend more than wall to wall. The carpet can encompass a small section at the base of the wall. This helps dampen excess noise but it will need extra cleaning care with a vacuum hose.

The carpet may need more than one type of under pad in different sections. In areas with lots of foot traffic it is ideal to put an under pad that will absorb the mechanical pressure. At entrances rubber under pad should be used in the circumstance of wet weather. This under pad will repel water and prevent it from soaking into the carpet.

A weekly carpet cleaning schedule should be maintained. This means vacuuming the rug once or twice a week. The carpet at the base of the walls should be vacuumed once a month at minimum. In addition to this carpeted areas should be professionally cleaned by carpet cleaners once a year. This will maintain the integrity of the rug and prevent dirt build up and mold growth.
